Today I started my 3 week vacation... by cleaning. I received my care/Christmas package in the post and one of my gifts warranted a rewiring/reorganizition. When it comes to wires, each one has to be the perfect length or they get coiled and strapped by the greatest and most humble of all organizational tools, the twisty tie. One thing led to another and I finished cleaning my entire apartment which was the inspiration for this picture.
Everyday I take my laptop to work and when I bring it back home, plug in the 3 cables you see in the picture. After being fed up with wires constantly falling behind the desk whenever I'm in a rush, I came up with the following simple solution: after plugging in all 3 wires, twisty tie them so they stick together. In addition to never having to hunt for cords again, the uniformity of the wires is a nice touch. To most, this entire post will seem odd and pointless, but the neat-freaks out there will understand ever word.

I just spent an entire day re-organizing my cables. Nowhere near as neat as yours, I'm sure, but pretty good by my standards. Running cables isn't as trivial as people think.
My desk now has the modem, router, my laptop with two esata external HDDs, a nettop, two monitors, speakers, a keyboard/mouse/KVM switch, and the Xbox.
Without some organization, stuff gets strained, broken, or suffers signal degradation.
I just packed up my computer and 2 of my external drives for Kate's sister to take home with her (she came to visit for a couple weeks) so I'll be computer-less for a month after we get back from our vacation!! Needless to say I'm a bit scared of withdraw hah. But now I have about 4 backups of everything spread out across 2 continents :) <--- what a geek.
but I totally hear ya on the need for cable ties.
btw..have you read "4 hour work week"? probably would be up your alley. I have an extra copy if you haven't...
